Too Hot

Image
Aircraft do not usually (civilian) fly at temperatures above 124 degrees Fahrenheit.  This is most common in Phoenix where they ground aircraft until temperatures fall below that temperature. Too hot. It is also the flip side - when temperatures hit below -69 Fahrenheit ... which means wind chill plus temperature and that means it is possible to reach -69 .... it becomes dangerous to fly. And now, I learn that trains don't work well either in heat - I might wonder ... ok, so if it is 100 degrees a train can't run well, but why 15 minutes.  It could be 12 or 20 minutes.  Does heat just slow you down 15 minutes? Trains and planes don't work in heat.  I would assume cars might very well avoid that as well and stay indoors. We are the most technologically advanced civilization that has existed but when it gets to be 90-100 degrees everything stops. It is interesting that in all past years, it has reached at times, well over 110 for periods of time and...

Grocery Shopping

Image
Long ago, when people (usually women, or a husband and wife) would go shopping at the grocery store, they dressed up (a bit).  Did their hair, usually wore a skirt or dress, maybe coat or something to cover ... never pants or shorts.  Sort of like the following but the following is just a shot of one image at one moment in time, although I believe it represents the period reasonably well.      There was also a downside and while I could not find one showing how common it was, I did find one photo ... People smoked in the store!!  Yes they did.  In the frozen food aisle.  In the produce area.  Everywhere and then they would throw the butts on the floor.  Yes sir. The other day I was in the store.  No nicely dressed women or men, and no smoking, but I did find/see - A husband and wife walking through the store with a very large Doberman.  About the size of the dog above.  He did not have any indication of being a supp...

Golden state really just brass

Image
Ok, so the years are a bit off - 3 years actually, but in data from the Census Bureau, California ranks number 1 among 50 states for the percentage of its residents 25 and older who have never completed 9th grade, and 50th for the percentage who have never completed high school.   Yet, these same people drive and vote - they protest, march, and work at businesses ... they live in that state and consume the resources ...  They also spend close to $10,000 per student in California ... or rather taxpayers pay nearly $10k per school child per year ...  Are they getting their $$s worth? Oh  - quick reaction ... you point out how some other state pay more for education ..... and ?? The dynamics of that state, the demographics of that state are not the same!  They pay $10,000.00 per child and have the least educated state.  A Golden State ... no.  A very tarnished state with more homeless (150,000) than some small cities.  And...

Forget Innocence, Just Wash Your Hair and Watch Disney

Image
If our Culture was not busy enough trying to drag us into The Age of No Innocence. a study from UC Berkeley in 2018- Shampoo and Toothpaste and soap can bring on puberty earlier in girls.   https://nypost.com/2018/12/26/early-puberty-in-girls-linked-to-shampoo-and-toothpaste-study-says/ These endocrine disrupters are commonly found in hygiene products ... so for more than 20 years according to the study, the onset of puberty has been earlier and earlier leading to some medical and ... behavioral issues. For anyone who doesn't find media sites reputable, then maybe this medical site link! It is the behavior issues I would like to think about. Whether the behavioral issues are simply tantrums or sexual, whether it is a developed mind-set about them and who they are as people.  Interesting that last point - brains do not fully develop until 25, until that time they are still under development .... and so we have, say a 17 year old who knows she is X or ...

What's a Little Disney Between Us

Image
I loved Disney.  It was magic! It was fantasy!  It brought the imagination to life - like Dreamworks or any film production - Disney brought our imagination into the fantastical magic world that became a reality.  From the park, opened on July 17, 1955, to the movies whether cartoon or real.  So many, and Kurt Russell was one of the first actors to represent Disney in films  - Computer Wore Tennis Shoes.  Charley and the Angel. Pete's Dragon.  Mary Poppins - no one can forget that nanny, once watched.  Her and that sugar and medicine, flying umbrella and the chimney sweep and chalk drawings.  Pinocchio, Snow White, Fantasia.  Dumbo - and those pink elephants on parade.  Bambi.  Cinderella.  Alice and Wonderland.  Robin Hood - several versions, all so very inaccurate but still fun.  So many films, and all very family oriented, directed and safe. I don't know why we need to change and add and m...

A little yard work

Image
Question 1 - how long does it take to tear up a driveway and a yard - rip it up and put the rubble and dirt in a big haul away? Question 2 - how long does it take to lay a new driveway and lay some brick work in the dirt for paving stones? The answer to question 1: about one week The answer to question 2:  once its all torn up and cleared away, it took 3 days. How many men were involved?  8 (each day) And 5 days later picture 2 (bottom of the two photos).  That is 15 days ...

What do these three things have in common

Image
I do not use Aqua Net, but I did have a relative who did for many many years - and I remember the hairspray.  So, when I bought some or saw some used by someone, I smiled, remembering my relative using it and remembering the can/spray. As a kid, I ate graham crackers - I'd sit and watch TV and have 2-3 crackers.  I remember.   That's not what they have in common though.   That can of Aqua Net is now smaller in size than it was 6-10 months ago.  That box of Graham Crackers is now slightly more narrow than it was a few years ago.  That package of Oreos is now more square and less rectangular than it was (hence, less cookies). Oh and another one ... The Aunt Jemima story is a whole different story ... what is interesting and related is size. When the company decided to erase the image and changed bottles, they reduced the size ever so slightly.  How do I know, because I had 4 full bottles of Aunt Jemima I bought before t...

If you're gonna roof!

Image
An area about 6 feet by 3-4 feet = 15-24 sq ft.  You can see the angle and the sizing.  Now, replace that portion.   How long do you think it would take you?  Assume the worst - assume its rotted.  Assume. How many days?  And how many men should be involved (meaning:  at the site, watching, helping, standing)?
