What's a Little Disney Between Us


 


 

 

I loved Disney.  It was magic! It was fantasy!  It brought the imagination to life - like Dreamworks or any film production - Disney brought our imagination into the fantastical magic world that became a reality.  From the park, opened on July 17, 1955, to the movies whether cartoon or real.  So many, and Kurt Russell was one of the first actors to represent Disney in films  - Computer Wore Tennis Shoes.  Charley and the Angel. Pete's Dragon.  Mary Poppins - no one can forget that nanny, once watched.  Her and that sugar and medicine, flying umbrella and the chimney sweep and chalk drawings.  Pinocchio, Snow White, Fantasia.  Dumbo - and those pink elephants on parade.  Bambi.  Cinderella.  Alice and Wonderland.  Robin Hood - several versions, all so very inaccurate but still fun.  So many films, and all very family oriented, directed and safe.

I don't know why we need to change and add and make content more 21st century.  To keep up with kids today?  Why?  We spend so much time wanting to be older to do older things - drive, drink, party, sex, and be independent ... and none give us that sense of what we had when we were 8.  We strive to be more mature ... only, at some point in life, we want to have less responsibility, less stress, less anxiety ... and we don't understand that period of 'less' was when we were younger.  I do understand some kids grow up with so much stress at a young age and their lives are anything but simple ... that actually does not negate my point in any way.  However complicated life is for them when younger, it gets worse when they get older.  So why not let them have that period of innocence and simplicity.  The answer to this I do not know, but I do know people spend a lot of money to try to have that early life back, but it leaves only a mess in its wake. 

Disney provided that safe environment - whether realistic or not, it was there - safe for any kid to watch.  Sunday night for me was Disney's Wonderful World of Disney ... with a Disney movie or something Disney on TV.  Apple Dumpling Gang was one film I remember being shown on a Sunday night.  There was a even a 2nd part if I recall.  Simple.  Basic.  Dumb in many ways ... but simple and funny and cute.  You could leave your 8 year old alone watching Disney, and not be concerned about issues we are all too familiar with today on television and films.

It is also not an anti anything that Disney did not include X, Y, or Z before ... it was simply that the ideal of magic and fantasy and family do not comport with X, Y, or Z.  That does not mean X, Y, or Z cannot enjoy Disney as much as anyone else.  It does not mean it cannot be part of all our lives, as it has always been whether one was X, Y, or Z.  Walt Disney had a dream, and I am very certain, what exists today in its place - Disney - is not the dream he had in mind.  I always loved going to Disneyland ... the magic and fantasy.  I learned about the underground basketball court under Matterhorn, that the drawbridge really does work and has gone up and down before.  That the gates of the Fort do work, and have been closed before.  I loved the Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.  My favorite place on a hot day.  The quote about enemy forces not drinking from the Ohio river always left an impression.  I used to believe that all those amazing smells on Main Street were real, until much later I learned they are pumped in via ducts to entice a certain feeling among the crowds.  That some upper levels structures did have rooms in them that were usable.  The Club was another secret moment - seeing the door and imagining ... the Pirates of the Caribbean ... which is now not much.  I am a little happy to know I still have some programs and brochures with the original listed ... even if children will never see it.  


Maybe on some level - you change it, bother a generation, but the up coming generation never knows the difference and to them, its Disney ... without knowing it is far from what Walt Disney ever imagined for his park in July 1955.

No time to stop and read the details! Just smokin'

And now that the evidence has had time to accumulate, it’s also become clear that the extravagant promises made by anti-smoking groups—that implementing bans would bring about extraordinary improvements in cardiac health—never materialized. Newer, better studies with much larger sample sizes have found little to no correlation between smoking bans and short-term incidence of heart attacks, and certainly nothing remotely close to the 60 percent reduction that was claimed in Helena. The updated science debunks the alarmist fantasies that were used to sell smoking bans to the public, allowing for a more sober analysis suggesting that current restrictions on smoking are extreme from a risk-reduction standpoint.
